OUR BLACK HAIRSTORY
THE ROOTS
My hair story started at a young age, growing up in my mother’s hair salon. The “Getting my hair done” was an experience I always got to see or even experience myself. My exposure to the salon environment was more than just seeing beautiful hair transformations, various techniques, styles, deep conversations/ advice sessions, encouragement, learning the foundation of a community, and running a small business. My mother instilled self-love and acceptance of who I was (as a young black girl) and how I wanted to wear my hair (by never forcing the use of chemicals or other alternatives that I didn’t feel comfortable in)
TISH TRESSES
My business journey began at 15 years old when all my knowledge, experience, and my "gift “came together. During this time, I was learning and styling my own hair (my favourite styles were crochet braids and cornrows). I can’t talk about our “hair story” without our first ever event, “Embracing your Tresses”. The idea came about when a client had mentioned that she would love for her daughter to learn how to maintain her own hair and the lack of hair knowledge within our community. The event and Tish Tresses| Mind & Body platform began with the goal of helping young girls and women learn how to care for their tresses. My goal to help women and girls later transitioned to “Tish Tresses”. Tish Tresses is a hair care and hair accessory business that aims to help improve the way people maintain their hair. The brand offers items/products that are “essential” as it relates to black hair/culture: Silk reversible/ Double Layer Bonnets, Braid/Loc bonnets, Silk pillowcases, Edge Control, Silk Durags, Silk Tie Wraps for edges and Silk Lined Beanies.
Special thank you to my mother for the encouragement/love, to all my clients, and supporters for being apart of my "Hair Story".
